Meet Our Team
Jack Stone
Jack moved to Grand Marais in 2006 and opened Stone Harbor in 2010. Over that time he has watched the business grow and mature. He opened the store with an emphasis in customer service and local expertise. As a lifelong paddler, hunter, climber and camper he has drawn on those experiences in terms of staffing and product lines. Spare time is spent with his Llewellin Setter Knute and trying to educate the younger generation of kids, grandkids and great grandkids about the great outdoors.
Beth Poliquin
As Chief Operating Officer, Beth works tirelessly to keep operations on track. She joined the team in 2016, working part-time, and kept finding more things to do. From budgets and orders to advertising and training, she helps ensure that we’re succeeding in our vision and mission. She’s been paddling on and off since college and was a kayak tour guide in Hawaii, and has won her share of Stand Up Paddleboard races in the Midwest and New England. When she’s not supporting operations, Beth can be found on an adventure with her family, coaching at a CrossFit gym, or teaching PE to elementary and middle school students.
Andrea Patten & Sylvia Peters
Andrea (pictured right) and Sylvia (pictured left) are the team behind our back office. They receive and process all of our incoming orders while seamlessly communicating store needs to help ensure we’re always well stocked as Retail Receivers and Sales Associates.
When Andrea isn’t processing orders, she can be found working with kids in the local community or baking something delicious at home.
Sylvia enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Chuck and their two dogs when she’s not inputting inventory or ordering more books.
John Silliman III
John is our Tour and Rental Coordinator. He has been working as a naturalist and guide in Cook County for over 21 years. He is certified as an Emergency Medical Responder, in Wilderness First Aid, ACA Kayaking, ServSafe and as a Firefighter. John enjoys spending time kayaking, canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, birding, camping, and paddleboarding with Marie and their two dogs.
Chuck Peters
Chuck keeps our operations running as our Facilities Manager. Between fixing boats, transporting items, and general maintenance he still finds time to talk about fishing with folks on the sales floor. Chuck enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife Sylvia and their two dogs when he’s not fixing or moving something at the store.
Jake Lubke
Jake is an incredible fisherman who enjoys sharing the sport as a Tour Guide. Additionally, you’ll find Jake prowling the store as he reviews our fishing department as a Sales Associate and Retail Buyer. When he’s not helping out at the store Jake can likely be found on a lake or river seeking the latest catch, teaching others to fish, or resting at home.
Brianna Monson
Brianna loves to be outdoors whether it's swimming, skiing, running, stand up paddle boarding, biking, or camping. In the fall, she participates in cross country running, and track in the spring. During the winter, she enjoys downhill and backcountry skiing. This is her first summer working at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, but she loves to help out any way she can. Come by and pay Brianna a visit, and say hello!
Patience Sifferath
Patience loves everything outdoors! From portaging and canoeing, camping, hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, and even fishing. She also loves traveling and adventure. In the fall, she runs cross country. In the winter, she plays basketball for the Cook County Vikings basketball, and actively participates in track in the spring. She loves her two dogs and she also loves giving treats to the parade of friendly dogs that come to visit us in store! Additionally, Patience has played guitar for over half her life! This summer marks her first year working with us here at Stone Harbor, so please stop in to give her a warm welcome and say hi!
Amory Arado
Amory Arado was born in the Twin Cities and grew up around the Midwest. He spent most of his summers around the Great Lakes and the North Shore of Lake Superior. During that time, Amory picked up competitive rowing, as well as canoeing and kayaking recreationally. He has continued his rowing career at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma WA where he studies Physics with the hopes to further his education and become a professor. Amory is one of our trusty and experienced kayak and canoe guides here at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply (call him about tours!). Additionally, he loves learning, exploring and being excited about gear, ideas, and the outdoors! If you have any opinions on specialized fleeces, or any other niche clothing, Amory would love to hear about it! Researching mundane topics is also one of his hobbies.
Keean Selin
Keean is one of our sales associates and experienced guides here at Stone Harbor. Although it is his second summer working in store, it is his first summer working as a guide. Keean lives on the Gunflint Trail at a camp called Okontoe: a family campground and Christian retreat center, which his family runs. He’s also worked at Coldwater Foundation: a youth boundary waters canoe trip ministry camp. Through Coldwater, he’s learned a lot about paddling, wilderness first aid, and leadership skills (among many, many other huge things). He has been on the water - mainly canoeing - for most of his life. Having been born in Cambridge, MN, Keean has also lived overseas in Mongolia for 3 1/2 years; he has now been in this area since January of 2020. This year, he finished his senior year of high school, but from 10th-12th grade, he actively participated in cross country running, and track and field. Last winter, he also tried out cross country/Nordic skiing by being on the high school team (and he absolutely loved it!). Some things that Keean loves to do (besides running and skiing ) are playing guitar, piano, drums, singing, canoeing, hanging out with friends, meeting new people, and talking about deep subjects. Stop into Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, Keean would love to meet you and hear some of your stories; whether that be in store, on trail, or on the water.
Valerie Hurth
This is Valerie’s third summer at Stone Harbor, where she works as a Sales Associate and Tour Guide. When she is not working at the store she spends time canoeing, hiking and reading classic literature. Her favorite books are “The Lord of the Rings” series and “The Count of Monte Cristo” (because who can pick just one!). She just graduated from high-school this spring, and is looking forward to going to college on the east coast. In 10th-12th grade Valerie was on the high school Cross-Country Ski Team, where she enjoyed the bountiful snow of the North Shore while training and racing. If you stop by the store, Valerie would be happy to talk to you about ski gear, Boundary Waters trips, or any other questions you may have.
