If you’re planning an outdoor adventure in Northern Minnesota, shop at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply. Nestled on the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior, Stone Harbor is your premier store for high-quality gear and clothing, guided tours, rentals, and friendly outdoor advice.
High quality gear
The Superior National Forest and BWCA offer grand challenges for testing equipment, and the products we offer at Stone Harbor have passed those tests with flying colors. We carry some of the top names in camping and hiking – brands like Nemo, Marmot, Fjällräven, Kühl®, Outdoor Research®, Therm-a-Rest, Cascade Designs, Osprey, Gregory, and Sea to Summit. Paddling gear is a must for the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail, so we have Langford Canoes; kayaks from Eddyline, P&H, and Wilderness Systems; paddle boards from Pau Hana and Grey Duck; and paddles from Warner, Aquabound, and Bending Branches. We also carry hard-to-find local and specialty brands, like fly and fishing rods from Tenkara, St. Croix and Redington; landing nets from Wolf Moon; handmade wooden paddles from Glørud Design; bags from Frost River; canoeing and camping gear from Cooke Custom Sewing; backcountry skis from Altai; axes and hatchets from Rud Metalworks; and a selection of locally made flies. Our shop is filled with tried-and-true favorites, handpicked by our staff, so you know you’re getting the best gear available on the market today.
Functional and stylish clothing
We choose clothing and footwear that work and play well in the outdoors. That means you can find functional, comfortable, high quality designs to keep you performing, feeling, and looking great.
We stock Bjørn Dæhlie for the outdoor athletes who want high performance and style. Lolë is a women-specific Canadian company that just gets it with women’s shapes and aesthetics. PrAna makes beautiful, funky clothing that is designed for movement. The folks at Rab live in the mountains but design their clothing with a Minnesota vibe – nothing fancy or over-engineered; just robust, hard-working pieces we all love. The wizards at Icebreaker make 100% wool clothing that is comfortable and looks good on all body types. Sherpa Adventure Gear is on a mission to help the communities and people of Nepal by weaving their rich heritage together with the latest designs and technology. The Mountain Khakis line is all about well-made casual charm. Kuhl combines a retro look with high performance materials to make unique and functional clothing. The Helly Hansen crew is filled with weather geeks and it shows–they make clothes fit for anything the North Shore climate delivers. Marmot makes high performance clothing that is flattering and durable. We’re big fans of Outdoor Research because they design clothing that works in the variable weather conditions we encounter on the North Shore. Base layers are a critical for your outdoor adventures, so we offer Icebreaker and Terramar. And because we love the water, we have swimsuits from Tyr and paddling clothing from Level Six.
XTRATUF boots–flexible, durable, and 100% waterproof–fit in well in the land of 10,000 fishing holes. Muck is known for its 100% waterproof neoprene rubber boots and we have plenty of styles to choose from, along with some of their stylish casual boots. Vasque boots are made by the same folks who make Red Wing boots, so you know they are innovative and tough. Salomon has trail running and hiking down to a science. Oboz boots are all about the footbed, which gives you a great feel right out of the box. And Astral footwear rounds out the footwear selection with high performance trail, water, and casual shoes.
Unique books and gifts
Is there anything better than sitting in the woods near a lake reading a good book? We offer how-to books on camping, kayaking and canoeing, as well as stunning photography books of Lake Superior and her many moods. Want an armchair adventure? We have some of those books too.
Looking for gifts? Check out our camping and travel games and outdoor-inspired greeting cards. Be prepared to fall in love with the cribbage boards, keychains, and Christmas ornaments handcrafted by Castle Danger Woodworks in Two Harbors. And of course, our Stone Harbor logo gear is always a great gift.

If your adventures take you into Cook County or Lake Superior, be sure to check out our custom-designed maps. We know we can’t go everywhere with you, so this is the next best option. Our summer/winter recreational map shows hiking trails on one side and ski trails on the other. It’s the most comprehensive map you can find of Cook County’s trail system. And if you are a North Shore kayaker, you are going to want our Kayaker’s Map. On one side you can see the North Shore and on the other, Isle Royale.
Shopping at Stone Harbor offers more than just great gear and clothing–when you walk into Stone Harbor, you connect with a team of employees who are truly passionate about the outdoors and the North Shore region. Jack, our owner, has been paddling the BWCA since before it was even called the BWCA. This love of the outdoors and adventures extends through our entire staff–we have paddlers, hikers, bikers, climbers, fisherfolk, campers, runners and more. All of them are excited to share their expertise with you.
