Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply offers a wide range of unique outdoor experiences, all year round. Join us this winter for the following tours.
Ice Fishing/Winter Camping Excursions
Stone Harbor is offering a couple special overnight excursions this winter, filled with ice fishing and winter camping. Both will include food, a Wilderness First Aid-certified guide, and all necessary fishing and camping gear (including heated Snowtrekker tents). Participants supply their own clothing, but are able to rent outerwear from Wintergreen Northern Wear at a substantial discount if desired. Tours are $400 per person, please register by calling the store at 218-387-3136.
Dog Sledding
This year, we’re offering dogsledding tours with Erik Simula, available every day of the week except Monday. These tours will be 1.5 hours in length; cost is $95/person for adults, and $75/person for kids under 12. Single riders are $140. During Christmas week (12/26 – 12/30) the tours will be one hour in length to accommodate more riders.
In addition, for one week in February, Stone Harbor will be offering a special backwoods dogsledding experience. We’re partnering with Points Unknown to offer their True North Dog Mushing Experience from February 16-19, 2012. View this pdf to learn more. You’ll learn how to interact with sled dogs, harness them, and hook them up to the sled – and then they will take you on an adventure through their deep woods bush trails. You can schedule a morning or afternoon adventure, from 2-3 hours in length. Cost is $179 per adult and $99 per child (under 12). Children under age 5 may meet the dogs, but it is not recommended to take them out on the trail. Call the store at 218-387-3136 for more information or to register.
Ice Climbing
The North Shore is the Midwest’s top ice climbing destination. Combine frozen waterfalls with spectacular scenery and you’ve got a great day on the ice. Ice climbing with our professional guide instills the knowledge and confidence necessary to discover this exhilarating winter activity. Together, you will climb in the Cascade River gorge or Devil’s Track River canyon for the ultimate winter adventure. All gear provided. $145/pp. These tours are scheduled upon request (maximum 6 participants), contact us to learn more or get on the schedule.
Winter Camping
Have you ever wanted to try winter camping, but were intimidated by the cold? This tour provides everything you need to ensure safe and cozy comfort. All you need to bring is clothes, we’ll provide the rest. Price includes one night of indoor lodging (so you can get an early start the next day) as well as two nights and three days in the wilderness in a Snowtrekker heated tent. $400/pp. Contact us to register.
Skijouring
Do you cross country ski? Do you have a medium to large size dog? Ever thought of combining the two?! Skijoring (pronounced “ski-your-ing”) is a fantastic way for both of you to get outside and play this winter. Skijoring requires specific trails and our guide knows exactly where to find them. You’ll learn about gear, technique, and training tips to keep both of you safely moving forward. $150/person + dog (bring your own dog!) includes a Friday night (7-9 pm) instructional presentation and on-snow demonstration and instruction Saturday morning (9 am-noon). Maximum 12 participants. The cost includes equipment that you’ll be able to take home, and use with your dog in the future! Contact us for more information and to register.
Ice Fishing
Join us on a guided day trip up the Gunflint Trail as we fish for walleye, lake trout, northern pike, rainbow trout, and brook trout splake. All gear and a lunch is included. $195/person, arranged by special request. Contact us for more information or to register.
Snow Kiting
Harness the power of the wind to fly over a frozen lake on skis or a snowboard. We’re offering three special snowkiting weekends under the expert instruction of Michael Kratochiwill at the LAKAWA School of Kiteboarding. The weekend will begin with a Friday night “armchair adventure” where we will discuss kiteboarding in the store and learn more from Mike. Then, on either Saturday OR Sunday (whichever day has better wind) we will be going outside for a full day of instruction and riding on a frozen lake. Kiting gear, lunch, and a souvenir t-shirt will be provided. Please plan on bringing your own skis or snowboard (also available for rent from Lutsen Mountain). There will be a limited amount of skis and snowboards to borrow from Mike, however, bringing your own is recommended. Cost is $300 per person, with a minimum of six people is required in order for the event to take place. Contact us for more information or to register.
