Where has the summer gone? We just finished up Fishermen’s Picnic this past weekend, and it was great to see so many of our friends return to Grand Marais for the annual celebration. Of course, many took advantage of our summer clearance sale! There were many great buys and it gave us a chance to make room for our fall and winter merchandise.
Yes, believe it or not it is getting cooler. It won’t be long before we are all out there with our skis and snowshoes.
Before the snow flies, however, there are still some great activities ahead. This is a spectacular time of the year to go on a canoe or kayak trip, because the nights are cool and the bugs are less interested in us. This will last until almost November so make those plans now! Grand Portage has Rendezvous Days coming up soon, where you can get a flavor of the fur trading days and learn about the Native American culture. And in September, we have two great music festivals in Grand Marais.
One event that Stone Harbor is working hard to help organize and put on is a three day dog sled stage race that will take place in early January. In a stage race, there is a start each morning and a race of around 60 miles each day. Each night, the mushers get to relax with friends, family, other mushers and folks from the community. The race will include Grand Portage, Grand Marais and the Gunflint Trail. The planned purse will be $25,000 so we expect some of the top teams in the region and Canada. Grand Portage has agreed to guarantee that purse and with their help it will be a great event. More to follow on that – but we need volunteers to help put this on, so check your calendar for January 2013! If you want to help, give us a call. As soon as we get our web site up and running we will get out more information.
With all that said, even though we’re planning for winter – as the days get shorter and the nights cooler – we have a lot of great summer activities left to go. So, come on up and visit. We’ll have the coffee on for you.
