If you’re planning an outdoor adventure in Northern Minnesota, shop at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply. Nestled on the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior, Stone Harbor is your premier store for high-quality gear and clothing, guided tours, rentals, and friendly outdoor advice.
High Quality Gear
The Superior National Forest and BWCA offer grand challenges for testing equipment, and the products we offer at Stone Harbor have passed those tests with flying colors. We carry some of the top names in camping – brands like Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Big Agnes, MSR, Cascade Designs and Sea to Summit. Paddling gear is a must for the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail, so we have Langford Canoes, Maelstrom composite sea kayaks, Wilderness Systems kayaks, and paddles from Sanborn and Bending Branches. We also carry hard-to-find local and specialty brands, like fly and fishing rods from Tenkara, St. Croix and Redington; landing nets from Wolf Moon; packs from Granite Gear and Frost River; canoeing and camping gear from Cooke Custom Sewing; backcountry skis from Marquette Backcountry and Altai (Hok); and a selection of locally made flies. Our shop is filled with tried-and-true favorites, handpicked by our staff, so you know you’re getting the best gear available on the market today.
Functional and Stylish Clothing
We choose clothing and footwear that work and play well in the outdoors. That means you can find functional, comfortable, high quality designs to keep you performing, feeling, and looking great. There is arctic clothing from Wintergreen because it’s made in Ely and it’s crafted specifically for our northern climate. Those quirky Stormy Kromer hats and clothes are made by real live people right over in Michigan. Lolë is a women-specific Canadian company that just gets it with women’s shapes and aesthetics. PrAna makes beautiful, funky clothing that is designed for movement. Ibex found a way to make natural fibers comfortable and stylish and many of their clothes are made over in Vermont. Kuhl is supercool and so very functional. Marmot clothing is flattering and durable. Base layers are a critical for your outdoor adventures, so we offer SmartSilk, Thermolator, Helix and Hottotties by Terramar.
Patagonia offers a great variety of shoes, including a vegan option. Teva footwear fits in well here in the land of 10,000 lakes, where we need shoes that excel in water. Vasque boots are made by the same folks who make Red Wing boots, so you know they’re innovative and tough. Oboz boots are all about the footbed, so you get a boot that feels great, right out of the box.
Unique Books and Gifts
Is there anything better than sitting in the woods near a lake reading a good book? We offer How-To books on camping, kayaking and canoeing, as well as stunning photography books of Lake Superior and her many moods. Want an armchair adventure? We have some of those too. You can also find the latest editions of Outside, Superior Outdoors, and Backpacker magazines near the hand-crafted leather bound journals that are made by Frost River of Duluth.
Looking for gifts? Check out our camping and travel games, artisan chocolates from BT McElrath Chocolatier, and a great selection of outdoor-inspired greeting cards.
Shopping at Stone Harbor offers more than just great gear and clothing–when you walk into Stone Harbor, you connect with a team of employees who are truly passionate about the outdoors and the North Shore region. Jack, our owner, has been paddling the BWCA since before it was even called the BWCA. This love of the outdoors and adventures extends through our entire staff–we have paddlers, hikers, bikers, climbers, fisherfolk, campers, runners and more. All of them are excited to share their expertise with you.
We know how fun it is to find the “hidden gems” of the area – those places that are far enough off the beaten path to be exciting yet still accessible. Our summer and winter guided tours feature the assistance of an expert who has been there before. Our rentals, on the other hand, give you the opportunity to set out on your own. We can provide you with suggested routes and other tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your trip.
Grand Marais is Closer Than You Think!
If you’re used to traveling up to Duluth, you’ve only reached the southern tip of the North Shore – keep going up the North Shore Scenic Byway for some of the most gorgeous views of Lake Superior you have ever seen. Grand Marais is located about 20 minutes northeast of Lutsen – another popular North Shore destination. It’s also a gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, just up the Gunflint Trail. Grand Marais is an easy drive for our Canadian neighbors as well. Hop on Highway 61 from Thunder Bay and 128 km later, you are here.
Some of Minnesota’s greatest treasures are right here in Stone Harbor’s backyard. Come and visit our store and we’ll guide you to them.
