Another summer season is behind us. This was our third summer. It seems like just yesterday we were hauling boxes in from the warehouse and stocking our shelves for our opening. We have come a long way. The end of the summer is also a time we say goodbye to a few of our seasonal staff. Our guides are off to the far reaches of the earth. Justin is in Australia for a few months, Phil is off doing elk hunts in Colorado and Betsy has gone back to Portland for the winter. The good news is we expect them back, some sooner than others. Scott and Chris can now concentrate on their store duties until ice climbing, cross country skiing and ice fishing start. Beth is back doing what she does taking care of accounting and receiving.
The store is starting to look like winter. The skis and snowshoes are coming in along with all of our cold weather gear. We will be selling and renting Wintergreen gear again this winter, so that is being set up. Winter gear from brands like Marmot, Rab, Mountain Hardware and Stormy Kromer are on the shelves. We are looking good.
MEA weekend is coming up, and as in past years, Grand Marais will be hosting Moose Madness with lots of fun games and geo cache hunts. At Thanksgiving, you can come in and have your picture taken with Santa and his dogs. We’ll start right after our HUGE Thanksgiving parade on the Friday after Thanksgiving. You will need to get a seat early so you don’t miss any of the fun floats. But if you don’t get a seat early, don’t worry because many times the parade goes around twice. Depends on who is leading the parade – but I assure you, if it is us, we will go around twice.
Keep your eye on our website and Facebook page for any other upcoming events. And to once again plug one of our pet projects, keep an eye out for information on the Gichigami Express sled dog race coming up in January. We hope to have some fun events to go along with that also. If you are thinking of coming up for it, you might get your room reservations early as we think it might fill up. Dates are January 6th in Grand Portage, 7th on the Gunflint Trail and the 8th in Grand Marais. All the locations are within a short driving distance so pick a place to stay and join us all three days.
It’s a great time of year to be in Grand Marais. We hope to see you soon!
